Is refinishing cabinets worth it, or should they be replaced?
It comes down to the boxes. If the carcasses are sound, the layout works, and the doors are a style you can live with, refinishing addresses appearance without rebuilding the kitchen. If the layout is wrong, the boxes are damaged, or the storage does not suit how the kitchen is used, finish work will not fix that.
How long is a kitchen out of use during cabinet refinishing?
Doors and drawer fronts are removed and finished away from the kitchen, while frames are prepared and finished in place. Counters, sink, and appliances generally stay usable through most of the process, with the tightest restriction during in-place frame coating and cure.
Will the finish hold up to daily kitchen use?
Durability depends on the coating system and, more importantly, on preparation. Cabinets carry hand oils, cooking residue, and silicone from previous cleaners; if that is not fully removed and the surface properly abraded and primed, no topcoat will bond well. Cured cabinet coatings also continue hardening for a period after they feel dry.
Can cabinet doors be sprayed rather than brushed?
Fine-finish spray work is what removes brush texture and gives a factory-like surface, which is why doors and drawer fronts are taken off and finished under controlled conditions. Frames left in place are masked and sprayed with containment.
Do existing cabinets need to be a particular material?
Solid wood, veneered, and MDF doors can all be refinished, but each takes a different preparation and priming approach. Thermofoil and some laminate surfaces need to be assessed individually, because the question is whether a coating can bond to them at all.
